Finally, after many discussions with his older and worried mother (an Anne Revere Typecast), Phil has a Eureka moment. Of course! That`s all! Just as he wrote Orwellen reports about being a minor or Okie — he would be Jewish! He pretended to be a Jew and applied for jobs, associations, hotel reservations, etc. In a state of literary ecstasy, he almost shouts, “And I have a title for that – I was Jewish for six months!” Hollywood was then rather reluctant to mention Judaism explicitly, and perhaps not much less reluctant. Perhaps one of the few Hollywood movies before the J-word was mentioned with such pre-eminence was Charlie Chaplin`s Great Dictator in 1940. And the great concept of the film becomes so serious, so innocent and with such a lack of self-confidence or preventive cynicism that one cannot help but smile at the dramatic moment when the idea is revealed. But there is no visible Jewish home, no Jewish culture, no menorah, no synagogue. Dave is — important — away from home and tries to find an apartment to rent. Phil and his fiancée will meet the famous Jewish scientist Fred Liebermann (Sam Jaffe) at a cocktail party, and he is an exotic European intellectual, transparent on the model of Albert Einstein, who talks about Zionism and the Palestinian homeland. But that`s it.

And the film is very apolitical, beyond the easy references to far-right characters as forgotten as Theodore G Bilbo and Gerald LK Smith. The film was controversial in its time, as was a similar film on the same subject, Crossfire, released the same year (although this film was originally a story of homophobia, which was later turned into anti-Semitism).
